Yesterday we left San Francisco and flew via Honolulu to Auckland, New Zealand.
Like many before it was a typical travel day – long, cramped and boring. Unlike most travel days yesterday (or was that today) we crossed the international date line, losing a whole day. Also unusual were the strict biohazard procedures we were subject to on arrival in NZ. These included being sprayed to kill any pests while still on the plane and having our hiking boots and tent examined by the biohazard lab before we could leave the airport. Finally, and being expats ourselves we should not have been surprised, the first “Kiwi” we spoke to was a Brit from Rochester on passport control. It’s a funny world.
Today we will collect our micro camper van and start our New Zealand journey. The big trip has well and truly begun.
